Sunderland still confident despite poor results

"It was a boost," Sbragia said of his team's play at United. "The main thing was to get a bit of pride back and a bit of discipline, that was really important and we did it. In general, I was pleased with our performance, we didn't get battered."

Sunderland received criticism for playing a very negative style against the Red Devils, but they were poised to come away with a point until Nemanja Vidic scored deep into stoppage time.

Defender Phil Bardsley is also in good spirits after the United game, and he feels that his team will start to climb up the table if they continue to work hard.

"It's a bad run but we'll take a lot out of the United performance and hopefully that next win is around the corner," Bardsley said.

"If we keep playing like that and keep fighting, we'll climb the table."

Bardsley might not be too far off considering that Sunderland is only five points from 10th place, but what makes Saturday's game so big is that a home contest against West Bromwich is one the team needs to win.

The Baggies have taken just two points from their last nine games, and have lost six of their eight games away from home this season by a combined 13-3 score.

League-leaders Liverpool enter the weekend with a one-point lead and entertain Hull City on Saturday, while second-place Chelsea plays host to West Ham on Sunday.

Manchester United invades White Hart Lane to meet a Tottenham side with four wins in its last six league games, Arsenal meets Middlesbrough at The Riverside Stadium, and fifth-place Aston Villa hosts Bolton.

Newcastle visits Portsmouth in Sunday's other contest, while the rest of Saturday's schedule includes Fulham traveling to Stoke City, Manchester City entertaining Everton and Wigan hosting second-from-the-bottom Blackburn.
